The Department of Communication
Sciences prepares undergraduate and graduate students to demonstrate
knowledge of the science of human language as an abstract system of
communication as well as the anatomical and physiological bases that
enable us to understand and produce language. Central to this education
is knowledge of the forms and contexts of human language across the
lifespan and across culturally and linguistically diverse populations.
Mastery of this core knowledge provides a foundation for advanced study
in a variety of disciplines. Graduate students in Speech-Language
Pathology develop scientifically, clinically, and culturally appropriate
competencies in the prevention, assessment, and treatment of
communication disorders. Graduate students in Linguistics develop skills
of analytical reasoning and argumentation in the major components of
linguistic theory.
